edwards.jpgThe winner Carl Edwards, has been penalized 25 driver championship points because he was found in violation if the rules during the post race inspection. He is the winner of the Nextel Cup held on Sunday at the Dover international Speedway. Due to the points being lost, Edwards now stands at the sixth position instead of the third in the Chase standings. He is now a good 28 points less than the leader of the Chase Jeff Gordon.

The Rule of Section 12-4-A i.e. the actions detrimental to stock car racing, have found to be violated as the No 99 Ford that was driven by Edwards, was found to be lower than the standard set in the area of the right rear. The violations also were found in the rule no 12-4-Q i.e. car, car parts, components and/or equipment not conforming to NASCAR rules as also the Sections 20-12.8.1C that it failed to meet minimum rear car heights. This was enumerated in the no 3 bulletin of NASCAR Car of Tomorrow Technical Bulletin which was dated April 10, 2007.

These aberrations are also in addition to the fine slapped on Edwards’s crew chief Bob Osborne. A fine of 25 car owner championship has also been deducted from Roush Fenway Racing. Bob Osborne also has been places on probating till the date of Dec 31.

“The only thing I can think of is at the end of the race, Greg came up and gave me a couple of love taps to say ‘good job, good race’ and hopefully they find that that bent the tail of the car down a little bit,” Edwards said after the race. “There are some braces bent under the decklid so hopefully that’s what it is.”

The month of July saw a similar infraction as the cars of the drivers Johnny Sauter and Kyle Busch which raced at New Hampshire, had failed to meet minimum height requirements. In those cases too the crew chief had been fined $25000 and the driver had been deducted points 25 in each case by NASCAR.
