Chase Breakdown after the Atlanta Race

The Sunday’s race at Atlanta has made the picture quite clear now as for how the standings are going to be, it was the seventh of the ten Chase races and the top 12 drivers so far are:

1. Jeff Gordon: Had nothing all day, then wound up finishing seventh. What other team (outside of Jimmie Johnson) could have pulled that off?

2. Jimmie Johnson (9 points back): Maybe it’s time NASCAR start thinking about handing out two championships this season, because Gordon and Johnson are worthy.

3. Clint Bowyer (-111): Looked like this would be the race he cracked. But he didn’t. He rallied to finish sixth – one spot ahead of Gordon.

4. Carl Edwards (-261): Too bad he didn’t get the chance to battle Johnson. Surely it would have been another bumper-to-bumper classic.

5. Tony Stewart (-322): We’ll lay off Smoke this week. Don’t want to kick a dog while he’s down. Still, you have to wonder how he fell six laps down.

6. Kyle Busch (-328): He had every reason to be frustrated: He had a chance to move into fourth in the standings. If only his jackman had jacked up the car.

7. Kevin Harvick (-392): Should we stop here? Nah, they got in the Chase, so they deserve the recognition, even if we’ve long since forgotten what they’re driving for.

8. Jeff Burton (-400): After a slow start to the Chase, Burton is back to form. If only he could take back those results at Kansas and Talladega.

9. Kurt Busch (-419): It seems every week they’re finding ways not to win. Clearly, Kurt had a top-three car. To win next year, they’ll have to finish what they start.

10. Denny Hamlin (-424): Water in the carburetor? That’s how Hamlin explained running out of gas. Not so sure Martin Truex Jr. wants to hear it.

11. Matt Kenseth (-448): Started dead last; finished fourth. Yeah, that’s the Matt Kenseth who won a championship.

12. Martin Truex Jr. (-513): Had to be salivating to get his second win, and probably should have, considering he had the best car.
